Amazing Spider-Man
#3

1st Appearance & Origin of Doctor Octopus
 & first battle with Spider-Man.

Doc Ock has probably appeared in more Spider-Man Comics than any other villain in his very long history...He has left possibly the greatest mark on the Spider-Verse out of every Spider-Man villain except the Green Goblin. Right off the bat, Ock had an obsession with defeating Spider-Man. After his first defeat at the hands of Spider-Man, Ock came back in Amazing Spider-Man #11 & 12 which saw him connected to the death of Betty Brant's just introduced brother Bennett. He later tried his hands at defeating him again in Untold Tales of Spider-Man #19 but once again, defeated. In one of the greatest Spider-Man Saga's of all time, Octavius was secretly the Master Planner in Amazing Spider-Man #31-33 where he showed his face in only issue #32 and escaped with his life while spidey struggled to save his own.

Doctor Octopus played a big part in Amazing Spider-Man #53-57 in a memorable four part story and it was awhile before we saw him again, but when we did, he left his mark for all time. Amazing Spider-Man #88-90 saw some great battles between the Octopus and the Spider and climaxed in the unfortunate death of Captain George Stacy who was Peter's girlfriend's father. He died while the two super powered characters were fighting atop a building when falling debris fell on him while he was saving a small child. An absolute classic. Ock also got involved in some gang war's, especially some very good battles with Hammerhead then almost married Peter's Aunt May in Amazing Spider-Man #131.

Ock became somewhat of a stale character after making so many appearances. He made some guest appearances in other titles such as Daredevil #165, Captain America #259, the classic Fantastic Four #267, and others. Doc Ock formed the Sinister Six in Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1 and they re-grouped years later in Amazing Spider-Man #334-339 and Spider-Man #18-23. He was practically all over the place and his appearances began to lose their luster having appeared in every major Spider-Man titles over the years and then some! It wasn't until there were some great stories in Spider-Man Unlimited #3 & 18 when there was light shined on the man and his life with some fantastic in depth looks at Otto Octavius with alot of information on his past.

Ock was also involved in some lesser known issues such as the first Superman Vs. Spider-Man Treasury edition where he and Lex Luthor took on the Man of Steel and Spider-Man. Another great story that featured him as the villain was the Parallel Lives Graphic Novel. Doctor Octopus has also been featured in a number of Limited Series including Lethal Foes Of Spider-Man. He played a somewhat minor part in the Clone Saga, but what a dramatic part it was! He went up against the man called Kaine and was tragically killed and left with the mark of Kaine in Spectacular Spider-Man #221. His arms lived on in a Limited Series Funeral For An Octopus and then there was a new female Doctor Octopus for awhile.

Doctor Octopus was later brought back to life in Amazing Spider-Man #427 and AGAIN is a MAJOR enemy to Spider-Man...He was just too good a character to keep buried for THAT long! After the Spider-Man re-boot, Doctor Octopus made a number of low key appearances in the Spider-Titles as well as others including Nova, Spider-Woman. The Sinister Six was re-formed once again, but this time, Doctor Octopus was a target of the Sinister Six instead of being part of the team. His most recent Limited Series he was involved in was the incredible Death and Destiny mini series had a much closer look at the Death of Captain George Stacy as told in Amazing Spider-Man #88-90. Doctor Octopus is an all-time great villain, not only in the Spider-Verse, but in all of comics. You can sure bet we will see him again!
