Eugene "Flash" Thompson began as the bully in Peter
Parker's life, but as time went on and they both attended the same
college, they became very good friends. Eugene gained the nickname
"Flash" due to his speed as a running back for the Midtown High School
football team. An excellent all around athlete, he gained a sports
scholarship to Empire State University. He first appeared on the but the
second page of
Amazing Fantasy #15, and has been a part of the supporting cast
ever since. He, like every other supporting cast member, has had a life of
ups and downs...Here is his story:

The bully Flash Thompson has always been one of Spider-Man's greatest admirers, even beginning the first Spider-Man Fan Club way back in Amazing Spider-Man #17, picture left. Peter has always wondered how Flash would react if he knew that "puny Parker" was Spider-Man. There was a great moment between the two "enemies" in Amazing Spider-Man #8, where they both boxed, and Peter knocked Flash out, due to his Spider-powers of course. Another great early moment was in Amazing Spider-Man #5, where Flash impersonated Spider-Man and was caught by Dr. Doom himself. He was eventually saved by the real Spider-Man. |
| While attending college, Peter and Flash became very good friends, and the gang was always together: Peter, Flash, Harry Osborn, Mary Jane Watson, Gwen Stacy. Only missing for some time was Liz Allan, Flash's former girlfriend, who made Flash jealous many a time by trying to gain the affections of Peter. Liz eventually married Harry, and Flash went into the army. Flash was stationed in Southeast Asia, after the Vietnam War. There, he met and fell in love with a South Vietnamese girl named Sha Shan. Sha Shan first saved his life from a bombing incident in Amazing Spider-Man #108, pictured right. Sha Shan later came to America and lived with Flash briefly. |

Flash and Sha Shan were living happily ever after until Flash's friend Betty Brant Leeds began having problems with her husband Ned Leeds. Sha Shan suspected that the two were having an affair, and she eventually left Flash. Flash was framed for being the Hobgoblin in Amazing Spider-Man #276, after he mouthed off against the real Hobgoblin on live television. It was finally proved that he and the Hobgoblin were not one and the same. He even helped Spider-Man in a battle with the Hobgoblin, but injured himself after intercepting one of Hobby's pumpkin bombs. He had a brief relationship with Betty Brant after Sha Shan left him, and during the Hobgoblin incident. |
| The relationship with Betty eventually dissolved, and he became romantically involved with the former lover of Spider-Man, Felicia Hardy, the Black Cat. That too came to an end, and Flash continues to be one of Peter's only friends that never got married. Much needed back story on the life of Flash Thompson was given as it was revealed that his father was an abusive, alcoholic, retired police man. Flash eventually had drinking problems of his own, as he was trying to relive the "glory days" of his past. See Spectacular Spider-Man -1, and Spectacular Spider-Man #250 for some great reading on his childhood, and his current relationship with his family. |
