The character of Spider-Man has had many writers over the years pen his adventures as one would expect from such a long running character & related series...There is a vastly growing list of writers which include some of the greatest comic authors of all time...Of course this all starts the "The Man" himself, Mr. Stan Lee, Co-Founder of the Silver-Age Marvel Universe...Of course there are many others so lets take a look at them:

There have been at least 72 authors to take a "stab" at writing Spider-Man over the years.
Of those 72, only 19 have written Spider-Man for at least 10 issues.
22 writers have written Spider-Man only once.
The "BIG 3" are Stan Lee (114), David Michelinie (124), and the writer who used his pen the most: Gerry Conway (131).
Busiek, Kurt - Presently very hot writer who has done a great job on Untold Tales of Spider-Man, Amazing Fantasy & a few others...Now the writer of Avengers & Astro City. Wrote of Peter's 1st notice of his "Spider-Sense" in Amazing Fantasy #16-18.
Chris Claremont - Along with John Byrne, wrote the greatest Marvel Team-Ups's ever...Especially #74, 79, & 100...Long time Uncanny X-Men writer & also presently doing a better on the Fantastic Four. Along with John Byrne, wrote the greatest Marvel Team-Up's ever...Especially #74, 79, & 100. |

Conway, Gerry - Very versatile writer & veteran of the 4 biggest titles...Wrote more Spider-Man comics than anyone...Contributions include the controversial Amazing Spider-Man #121 & 122 in which Gwen Stacy & the Green Goblin died, as well as writing the 1st Punisher story, starting the original clone story, & introducing Harry Osborn as the 2nd Green Goblin. Also kicked of Spectacular Spider-Man with its first 2 issues. |
David, Peter - Ex Great Incredible Hulk writer of many years, has left his mark on the Spider-Man lore with his storyline: "The Death of Jean DeWolff" in Spectacular Spider-Man #107-111...Has done many projects for both Marvel & DC comics...Soon to write the new Captain Marvel series for Marvel. |

DeFalco, Tom - Writer of many Marvel titles including a long run on Fantastic Four...Wrote many Amazing Spider-Man including the New Black Costume in #252 & many "Gang-War" storylines...Presently writing Spider-Girl.
Dematteis, JM - Underrated writer of almost 100 Spider-Man comics, his greatest being the Kraven's Last Stand storyline...Also wrote Amazing Spider-Man #400, which should have left Aunt May dead. Also wrote the issues up to & including Spectacular Spider-Man #200 which had the death of Harry Osborn/Green Goblin II...Wrote 6 Titles in the Spider-Man "family" of titles.
Dezago, Todd - Writer of Sensational Spider-Man, having wrote more issues in that run than anyone.
Kavanagh, Terry -Wrote more issues of Web Of Spider-Man than anyone including issue #100 which presented us with the infamous "Spider-Armor".
Lee, Stan - "The Man"...Co-Created most of the Major Marvel characters in the Marvel universe...The Greatest Marvel Writer ever...Without him, there would be no Marvel Universe...Co-Creator of Spider-Man, as I believe Steve Ditko & Jack Kirby had A LOT to do with his creation also...Wrote 1st 100 issues of Amazing Spider-Man ...At least partially responsible for all creations included in those issues.
Mackie, Howard -Current writer of both Amazing Spider-Man & Spider-Man, great run on 1st volume of Spider-Man along with John Romita Jr...Also writes Mutant X for Marvel.
Mantlo, Bill - Veteran writer of many titles in the Marvel Universe, almost 100 Spider-Man stories to his credit, most noticeably his work on Spectacular Spider-Man. Highlights include his work with Frank Miller & his writing of the 1st Cloak & Dagger stories.
Michelinie, David - Another underrated writer of over 120 Spider-Man stories, including almost 100 on Amazing Spider-Man alone. He Co-created Venom & his great work includes the McFarlane drawn issues & many others throughout the 300's of this great run. |

Stern, Roger - Faithful Marvel writer who is very true & loyal to Marvel history...His greatest contribution has been his creation of the Hobgoblin & his recent Hobgoblin-Green Goblin War in Spectacular Spider-Man & Hobgoblin Lives. Wrote the excellent short-lived Marvel Universe. |
Wein, Len -Wrote over 30 issues of Amazing Spider-Man including the Green Goblin III storyline...Also contributed a number of early Marvel Team-Up's.
Wolfman, Marv -Another veteran writer of many Marvel titles...His greatest claim to fame is his great "Burglar Returns" storyline that culminated in Amazing Spider-Man #200. |

Stan Lee- 'Nuff said!
Gerry Conway - Wrote many important Spider-Man stories.
David Michelinie - His vast work has made a huge impression including his Venom stories.
JM Dematteis - Kraven's Last Stand alone puts him in top 10.
Roger Stern - Hobgoblin does it for me!
Marv Wolfman - Amazing Spider-Man #200...My favorite Spider-Man story ever!
Bill Mantlo - Great work on Spectacular.
Len Wein - Not many issues, but a very good job.
Peter David - Not much work on Spidey, but quality overcomes quantity here.
Tom DeFalco - Not as bad as some think...A very competent writer under pressure to sell comics.
Honorable mention goes to the current writer of both Spider-Man titles Howard Mackie whose work is not yet done!
